Canada's time zone changes: initial guidance on how to handle

On Sunday, time in British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba did not “fall back” as those provinces normally do.

Because of the short notice, how your technology handles this change is inconsistent and still in flux. Even the names of the new time zones are inconsistent across vendors, and in some cases, they’re simply incorrect. Additionally, the National Research Council of Canada’s official time information for these provinces has not been updated, leaving us in a situation where no official standard technically exists.

The biggest impact will be on your calendar. It is important that both your Calendar

Settings and the Time Zone of your events move to the new Time Zone, as appropriate. As

mentioned, these time zone names are not consistent across vendors, so please

look for the following.

Please note the following facts for reference. If your device does not show the

new time zone, you can set the entries to the fallback time zone.

Outlook for Windows / Outlook on the web name

British Columbia

*Please note that the UTC offset listed in the Outlook for Mac names is incorrect; however,

changing your event time to this time will still update your event to the correct time.

How to update your time zone settings

How to update the time zone of a calendar entry

New Outlook for Windows / Outlook on the web

  1. Open the event. For a recurring one, choose Edit series.

  2. Click the start/end time to expand it.

  3. Click the time zone (globe) button and pick the new zone.

  4. Click Save, or Send if there are attendees. Sending pushes an updated invite to them.

Classic Outlook for Windows

  1. Open the event. For a recurring one, open the series.

  2. On the Appointment or Meeting tab, click Time Zones. If you use the Simplified Ribbon, it may be under the overflow (…) menu, or you can type “Time Zones” into the search box.

  3. Time zone dropdowns appear next to the start and end times. Set them, then save or send the update.

Outlook for Mac

  1. Open the event.

  2. On the Organizer Meeting or Appointment tab, click Time Zones and choose the zone.

  3. Save or send.

What Campfire is doing

Campfire is assessing further opportunities to automate these changes for you and your team. Microsoft released, and has since revoked, a tool to migrate non-recurring calendar events to their new time zones.

We will be in touch with your teams directly to plan an automated move to their new time zones based on their current local time zone.

Please contact support@campfire.ca with any questions.
